Cockroaches

How Do We Recognize the German Cockroach?

There are several species of cockroaches that can infest homes. However, the German cockroach is by far the most common, and cases due to other species are quite rare in Quebec.

German cockroaches are easily recognizable by their streamlined shape, brown color, straight and filamentous antennas, legs adapted to running, and their enlarged pronotum, striped black and brown.

The females of this species carry their eggs on them until they hatch. They are protected by a shell called an ootheca.

They are gregarious and can be present in very large numbers in some restaurants and apartments.

They are particularly fond of kitchens and bathrooms. The signs of their passage are recognizable in their environment: exuviae, insects, then traces of excrements and oral dejections. They settle in cabinets, cracks, and other irregularities of their habitat.
